The Stinkerpants’ Multi-Cultural, DIY, Fantabulous Chuppah!

One of the projects I am MOST excited about for our wedding isn’t even something I’m responsible for. My mom and my aunt, two extremely amazing ladies (seriously, my mom made us a GORGEOUS quilt for our bed and my aunt is a famous pattern maker) volunteered to make Mr. Stinkerpants and I a custom chuppah for our ceremony. The chuppah will be hand-dyed silk with a multi-cultural, colorful theme.

This weekend, my mom and my aunt did a trial run–they had never dyed silk before, so they wanted to figure out how to do it. I drove up to my aunt’s house (about four hours north of San Francisco) to check it out. I was SHOCKED by what they had done! It was seriously far better than I could have ever imagined.

Here’s the chuppah, a work in progress. You can sort of see some white crystals on it…that’s sugar and salt:

The final product! Yes, that IS the Chinese symbol for “double happiness” inside the Jewish Star of David. I am THRILLED. The real thing will be much bigger (6 feet by 6 feet). They learned a lot about how to do this and see a lot of mistakes, but I think it’s PERFECT. Isn’t it beautiful?
