This is the Last I’m Gonna Say About It.

Last night we went to an election party at our friends’ house.  It was a grand lot of fun, and I have some photos to share.  However, I also have some words to share–and I’m going to share them first.

This is the last political thing I’m going to say around here.  Well, maybe not the LAST, but I’m definitely not going to be freaking out on a regular basis anymore, now that the election is over.

The results of the election are really bittersweet for me.  I am so, so thrilled that Obama won.  SO THRILLED.  This has been a long time coming, and I was really excited to be part of it.  It was also really cool to find out who the president was (*gasp*) on the night of the election.  I have only been eligible to vote in two other elections, and we all know how long it took to figure out the results of those elections.

My excitement about getting a brand-spanking-new president who is eloquent, intelligent and inspiring, however, was tempered by a major defeat in California.  I am really depressed about the passing of Prop 8.

I would like nothing more than to be dancing in the streets right now, but I really can’t.  I have a very bittersweet taste in my mouth, and I could barely sleep last night because I just knew Prop 8 was going to pass.  It’s really depressing and it’s hard for me to be happy right now.  There are a few things I know, however, that are helping me remain optimistic:

  • It is only a matter of time before gay marriage is legal.  No matter how you feel about homosexuality, this is a fact, people.  There were a lot of white people who didn’t want people like Y and I to get married 60 years ago.  And you know what?  The Supreme Court overturned laws in states prohibiting interracial marriage, citing that it is unconstitutional to prevent marriage between two people.  And it’s the same for gay people!  Our constitution is gender neutral when it comes to marriage.  It doesn’t get much more simple than that.
  • Lawsuits are already forming to appeal this decision.  It is not the right of the voters to decide what is or is not constitutional.  As Stefanie so eloquently stated, it’s the job of the Courts to protect the minority from the majority.  Let’s get on it, people!
  • The pendulum is swinging the other direction, finally.  Over the past 8 years, we’ve been living in a VERY conservative country.  But with the green movement and a landslide of a win by a Democrat, I truly believe we are heading in the other direction (finally).  Which leads me to…
  • Barack Obama is our rockin’ new president, and he opposed Prop 8.  Let’s see what you can do for us, Barack!

So that’s where I’m at right now.  I am sad about Prop 8, but I am trying to stay optimistic: we have an awesome new president, we made sure that young girls still have a right to privacy and we protected farm animals.  The feminist and vegetarian in me are quite happy.

And now, shall we move on to the election party, which was really fun and creative?

Y and I celebrating Obama’s victory!

Watching McCain’s concession speech (well said, McCain!):

One of the best things about this party were the beverages and foodstuffs, all of which were election-themed.  First, we have “Mav-rickies,” which were DELISH and very strong.  “After a few, you’ll see Russia from your house.”

Red and blue states Jello shots (I prefer the blue, duh):

img_7515.jpg

Blue state cupcakes, courtesy of Marianne–each cupcake was a different state!  I ate Oregon.  Go ducks!

img_7519.jpg

“Don’t &*%^ us, Ohio!” Swing State cookies, which I slaved over.  They’re peanut butter and chocolate, Ohio’s favorite combo.  Thanks for not $%#ing us, Ohio!  Very much appreciated!

Y, watching the results:

A few of my girlfriends and I:

And that is all, folks!  It’s over!  Finally!!  I am so excited to stop feeling anxious all the time.

Anyone else do anything fun for the election?  Or did you sit at home in your jammies and squirm until the results came in?

I guess we posted our 2 cents at about the same time. Awesome. I was typing my thoughts….backspacing…typing them again…backspacing again. I couldn’t get anything down in writing without the terms “half-wit” or “bible-beater” so I gave up (nearly) completely. Ha! But your words are just what I was thinking (minus the name calling), so thank you.

The election-theme food looks awesome! And I really love the Stewart/Colbert ‘08 shirt too. haha :).

We sat on the couch in our jammies, squirming till the results came in, indeed.

I agree with you 110%…more if that’s possible! I’m upset about Prop 8, but at least we will have a President who supports marriage for all! I’m hoping that will help the issue!

We went and did our wedding registry at Macy’s last night. I couldn’t sit still, so at least my energy wasn’t wasted! We got home just in time for Obama’s speech…which was truly amazing!

Looks like a great way to spend Election Night! Though I’m so sorry to hear about the results on Prop 8. And shocked, frankly. I didn’t really believe there were that many small-minded people out there … in California, at least. On the lawsuit front, the many federal judges to be appointed by President Obama in the next 4-8 years may make more of a difference on more areas of personal freedom than people have yet realized.

Ed and I actually piled into the car last night and drove to the White House after midnight. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen — mass celebration in the streets of DC! And despite thousands of people getting together in a spontaneous mob, many of them drunk besides, it was one of the most peaceful, purely happy crowds I’ve ever seen. As one person described, in some of the areas decimated by riots in 1968, people were dancing and cheering. That’s all. Just … dancing and cheering!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I just can’t get over how heavy-hearted today seems because of Prop 8. I can’t believe how much discrimination is still out there. And I am so sad that so many of my friends will never be able to experience the happiness of marriage that I have been lucky enough to find.

Your election party looks like lots of fun! Living in D.C., I felt like a waste watching from the couch instead of from a bar on the Hill, but the speeches were just SO late, and some of us have to leave for work at 4am! Watching from the couch in my jammies conserved the most energy to allow me to make it through the day today.

Bittersweet is the perfect word…it is what we kept saying over and over last night. When I woke up this morning, and Prop. 8 really appeared to have passed, I actually cried. I’ve never understoond the argument that gay marriage somehow takes something away from straight marriage. (Of course, I’ve never really understood any of the arguments against gay marriage…) I was so excited that I would be getting married in a state where everyone can get married. Then this morning I realized that one of the reasons why I’m so sad is that whether or not gay people can marry DOES affect my marriage. Taking this fundamental right away from some people makes the institution of marriage WEAKER and less sacred. Denying committed, loving couples the right to marry makes marriage fundamentally unfair. So there will be sadness for me on my wedding day because of the bigotry that was embedded into our constitution last night.

On the other hand, yay for Obama! Progress ahead!

@Stef–I just read your entry. HAHA. Totally. I did a lot of deleting too. I don’t want to offend anybody. I know I’m supposed to respect other people’s viewpoints, but on this particular subject (and the subject of racism and the like), I just can’t. So I’m respectfully going to say nothing to them.

@Heidi–WASN’T IT?! The man is AMAZING. Instead of turning the volume down when the president speaks, I’m going to tune in now. :)

@Tara–WOW! That sounds absolutely AMAZING! I just checked out your blog, and that entry seriously brings tears to my eyes. How awesome.

@Julie–I didn’t even think of how late it was on the East Coast! We were out until midnight waiting for the Prop 8 results…but really that’s nothing compared to the east coast. And on a “school night” to boot!

@Alex–me too. Definitely tears of joy last night and tears of sadness this morning. It’s depressing. I definitely agree with you about what this means for marriage. It makes me want to get ours annulled, just to get further away from it. It makes me ill.

Like you I am really torn by the election - Prop. 8 was the most important thing for me on the ballot, maybe more than the presidential race. I’m happy we got Obama but sad about Prop. 8.

Your party looks so cute! We had people last night but it was very last minute. (It was supposed to be at a friend’s house but her election bash was going to start at 8 p.m. and she doesn’t have a TV so we were going to have to watch on laptop!). A friend of mine in Tokyo for the week wanted so bad to be a part of the festivities that she joined us via live picture on laptop. She could see us and we could see her.

I love how eloquently you said everything and all the treats at the party are great. Love the blue tongue and Y’s shirt- I was watching Colbert & Stewart when Obama’s win was announced.

LMAO at your Ohio cookies. We didn’t screw up for once! (And you’re right, we love our pb and chocolate!)

10
Melothyryan Says:

Looks like a blast! What’re in the “Mav-rickies”?

Jilian Says:

What a fun party!! so clever. I was sound asleep before the final results were even in - I am not a night person. But with swing state cookies I might have been able to make it!

mhb Says:

As an ex-Ohisian, I greatly appreciate your Ohio cookies. I share the sentiment and the love of chocolate/pb. Any chance you’d share the recipe here?

Oh, and I’m finally proud of my home state again. What a wonderful feeling.

e Says:

you’re welcome from ohio ;)

Jewel Says:

We’re thrilled here in Ohio too! Didn’t bake cookies to celebrate, though. Might have too. Or make up a batch of buckeyes, at the least.

Yay Obama! Yay Ohio! Yay America. Let’s get work!
