Happy New Year! Opposites Attract Illustrated Save the Dates

Hey everybody!  I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and aren’t having TOO hard a time adjusting to reality again!

I am really excited about a big ‘ole project I’ve been working on since mid-November.  It’s taking a LOT of time and energy, but I think it will be worth it, and I think you guys will be really excited to see what it is, too (I hope, at least!). I should be able to reveal what’s going on in a couple of weeks (I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag too soon!), so sit tight.

I actually have a lot of cool things planned for 2010.  I can’t wait to share everything with you guys when plans get more settled.  In the meantime, how about a fun project from last year?

When I was contacted by W & M last year, I immediately loved them.  W’s got one heck of a sense of humor, and both of their personalities immediately jumped out of their emails.  I wanted to be their BFFs (but I’ll settle for Facebook pals, hahaha).

W & M wanted to play off the theme “Opposites Attract” for their Save the Dates.  Although they met when they bought identical townhomes, their personalities and interests are totally different.  The theme made for a really fun project and a super cute Save the Date.

I drew W & M in front of their individual townhomes  with objects that describe their interests on either side.  And, as you can see, W’s sporting his motorcycle leathers (and I love M’s dress, don’t you?!).

W is a total adrenaline junkie.  He loves motorcycles and sports of any kind.

walter2M on the other hand, is more my speed.  She’s into reading, shopping and an awesome collection of high-heeled shoes.

The back of their card features their cats, which are hilarious.  One is totally tiny, and the other is gargantuan and sleeps in really strange positions!  Super cute.

walter7I love drawing custom illustrations for people with big personalities.  It makes brainstorming for the right idea really fun, and the end product is always super unique.

American Gothic Save the Dates!

Back in August, I shared a little snippet of a drawing I was working on and asked if anyone could identify what it was based off of.  Here’s the finished product!

J & C contacted me and asked if I could base a save the date drawing off of the famous American Gothic painting by Grant Wood.  They had a few extra details to add: for example, they wanted to include their awesome kitties, and they wanted to change their outfits to be more personalized.

I love how it turned out!  Even the kitties are holding on to the pitchfork!

Save the Dates: R & B

It’s no secret that I love animals, nor is it a secret that I love drawing them.  I also love people who want to include their pets in their wedding invitations, Save the Dates or thank you notes.  When R & B contacted me, they wanted unique save the dates and wedding invitations featuring themselves and their dog, Diva.

Diva has got to be one of the cutest dogs I’ve ever seen, and she’s the first pit bull I’ve ever had the privilege of drawing.   Check her out:

R & B are people after my own heart: Diva is loved unconditionally, and I could tell while drawing her that she’s as sweet as can be.  Plus, her smile made ME smile, which is always nice.

R & B will be having a wine country wedding, and wanted something fun for their Save the Dates.  How cute is this pose, with B crushing grapes and holding R in the air?

This is one of my all-time favorite Save the Dates.  I love drawing dogs!

Custom drawn Save the Dates are a fun way to excite people about a wedding.  The vineyards are a common theme for my clients (partly because I’m located in the bay area, right near the California wine country areas of Napa and Sonoma), but it’s easy to spice things up and make the vineyard setting totally “you.”  I think B, R and Diva did a good job of that.  :)

Save the Dates: J and G

julie1.jpg

You may recognize the above photo from my post yesterday about my BIG FAT GIVEAWAY (Speaking of which, I am seriously blushing because people’s comments are SO NICE on both EAD Weddings and EAD Living).  I have been slacking a bit on taking photos of my latest work, and the giveaway was my motivation to get away from the computer and get behind my camera lens!  I have a few really great projects to share with you guys–definitely some of my favorites!

This Save the Date is for J and G, who introduced me to an awesome park in Maryland with a pagoda!  During wintertime, it’s decorated with giant snowflakes.  When J first sent me some photos, I couldn’t figure out what I was looking at–the snowflakes look REAL, but you know they’re not, because there’s no way you could see their individual shapes.  It really is beautiful.  Check out this photo:

Isn’t that beautiful? (here’s the source in case you need it)J and G live close to this awesome park, and they like to walk their adorable pooch, Dinah, there.  Because they’ll be married in the winter, we thought it would be fun to put them in warm clothes, walking in the snow.

I think their jackets are my favorite part of the whole thing!  Looking at them makes me feel really warm!

I love this one.  :)  I haven’t done a winter scene before, and I discovered that I really enjoy drawing trees with no leaves!

Every time I look at this Save the Date, I start thinking about the holidays.  Although I’m generally kind of a grump about the holidays (that tends to happen when you grow up as the only Jewish kid in your town), I’m actually looking forward to it this year! Anybody else kind of looking forward to winter?

I will miss the peaches, though…

Save the Date: K and M!

Happy Monday, people!  I am feeling *much* better since devising a new (well, sort of) direction for my business.  But more on that later.

For right now, I have a project to show you guys.  Actually, I have a backlog of projects!  My friend Marianne pointed out last week that I’m a slacker with sharing my finished projects on the blog, and she really enjoys seeing them.  So here’s a recent Save the Date!

When M first contacted me, she got me *very* excited about drawing a cheongsam (a Chinese red wedding dress).  As some of you may remember, I had the cheongsam for my wedding custom made, so I learned a lot about the beauty of these dresses.

M had a lot of other details to incorporate, too, including the date written in red diamonds (I’d never noticed that before, but it’s  a common way to write dates in Chinese culture!), paper lanterns with Chinese characters, and their pet turtles, climbing all over one another.

Here’s a detail shot of the turtles.  M sent me a photo of her turtles to work from!  I love including pets in drawings, and the turtles were a first!

I really love how these Save the Dates turned out! It was really fun to incorporate Chinese traditions into fun Save the Dates.

And as I said last week, I just finished a BUNCH of projects that were *really* fun to draw, so I look forward to sharing them with you, too!
