Program Ideas

Overall, I don’t like the idea of programs. Why? Because if I received a program at the beginning of a wedding, I’d be filled with dread. I’d think, “crap, this is going to be a really long, boring ceremony.” My cousin Julie, however, told me that she went to a Jewish/Catholic wedding with programs that explained the Jewish ceremony to the non-Jewish guests. Because over half of our guests will not be Jewish, I think this might be a good idea.

Also, the day is going to be a little confusing (people are going to meet at the Green Room and ride a trolley to the ceremony. Then after the ceremony, we’ll go on a mini-tour, then head back to the Green Room for the reception). I’m thinking that a “Wedding Day Timeline” might be helpful.

I plan to create a program of sorts with explanations of the day, and of Jewish and Chinese traditions.

Fancy, colored timeline for programs.

Favor Ideas

Mr. Stinkerpants and I have discussed favors at length. Before my friend Krista got married, I swear I’d never heard of wedding favors. She was the first of my friends to get married, so hers is one of very few non-family weddings I’ve ever been to. And I don’t remember any of my cousins having favors.

The whole thing seems like a gigantic waste of money if you don’t do it right. Like, who wants ONE wine stopper or TWO coasters? If you don’t have a set of something, you’re probably not going to use it. And what bride & groom can afford to give each guest a set of something?

My mother really likes the idea of an edible favor, and I tend to agree with her. Chocolate’s always a good one. Kathy (a friend from the knot) had cookies. Krista had little bags with tea and honey. These are good ideas. So I’m thinking we’ll either do food, or we’ll do a donation, or we’ll do some sort of plant. My mom hates the donation thing, unless it comes with chocolate (like mother, like daughter: I totally agree). But I like the idea of giving something alive to people, something they can plant and grow.

Cool favor/seating idea:

Getting People’s Photos

After our proposal, I realized how hard it is to get people to give you their digital photos. I set up a flickr account and asked people to upload them, but got no takers. In an attempt to get people’s photos, I’m thinking that we’ll do the following, and put them at each place setting:

Perhaps with these cards, we’ll have blank cds in envelopes at the reception for people to put their digital pictures on and mail them to us if they prefer. This wouldn’t cost us much as long as we didn’t put the postage on the envelopes!

Bridesmaids Dresses

Ideally, I think I’d like to choose one of the following three dresses. I like these dresses because you can pick a lot of different colors. If we do any of these, I’d like each bridesmaid to choose a different bright color. My favorites are Fuchsia, Sunset Gold, Scarlet, and Royal.

I think the model looks really stupid in the picture on the website. Here are the dresses on real people:

Here are some other ideas I’ve liked in the past. I really like the idea of doing multiple colors, but I’m not wild about the colors selections here. If we do this one, I like blue.

Or there are these JCrew dresses. They’re pretty. I like “vintage blue.” And I think I like the strapless one best, but either one.

Bright colors!

Everyone keeps asking me what my colors are. I really have no idea. I really don’t want to choose colors. I’m even wondering what the heck I need colors FOR. The only thing I can come up with are the bridesmaids dresses…so I was thinking, why not choose a bunch of different colors? My friends could each choose a favorite bright color, and then the groomsmen could have bright colored ties.
