Glass Water Bottles

waterbottle

My husband and friends all seem to think I’m a total freak of nature, just because of my slightly abnormal water receptacle.  Yes, it’s true: it’s not your average water bottle, but it is superior in so many ways, people.  Seriously.

So here’s the deal: I have a tendency to be a bit of a klutz.   I am constantly knocking things over, which is why it’s good for me to drink out of a water bottle–otherwise, I end up with water all over my desk, the couch, or myself.

I used to use a Nalgene or simply refill old bottles.  Bad idea–we’ve all heard about the risks of BPA (although Nalgene now makes BPA-free bottles).  Because Y is pretty aware of environmental and health risks associated with chemicals (we’re both hippies, but he also happens to frequent digg.com), he knew a long time ago that we shouldn’t be using plastic bottles.

So he ran out and bought us some BPA-free metal bottles from Klean Kanteen.  I hated them, though.  I know I’m going to sound like a lazy SOB, but I hate how long it takes to unscrew the cap!  Plus, I am convinced that the water tastes kind of like tin (Y insists that I made that up, but what does he know?!  He adds three drops of mint extract to his water, which would mask the tin taste anyway!).

My solution was to find a glass water bottle.  Glass is safe to drink out of, and I’m absolutely convinced that water tastes better out of glass than any other type of container.  So I did some research.

I fell in love with these beautiful glass water bottles, made by an Italian company.  They look plastic, but they’re actually glass!

Unfortunately, I’ve seen these in person, and the glass is pretty thin.  I was paranoid that I’d break it–after all, these ain’t cheap.

Then I discovered the Love Bottle, made here in San Francisco.  At first I wasn’t too wild about these because they aren’t exactly my style, but they’ve been coming out with more styles recently.  They also have plain bottles.

I found the bottle of my dreams, though, in a surprising place: Ikea!  These glass water bottles are big (meaning I don’t have to refill it five times a day) and they’re thick (meaning I’m more likely to break the tile in the kitchen than the bottle itself–not that I’ve tried it).  And on top of that, they are cheap.  At $2.99 each, I bought four, just in case one of my family members wanted one.

Unfortunately they all think I’m crazy.  They claim my bottle is “too heavy” and “breakable.”  I say they’re jealous.  My water tastes way better than theirs.

sorry to burst your bubble, but since i know you try to be super conscious about the products you use, read this article about Ikea:

I am totally going to look for these bottles next time I’m at Ikea. I hate drinking out of a glass because my damn cat likes to stick her paws in it and then drink out of it. Gross. I also like the idea of filling up a big bottle and keeping it on my desk all day so I don’t have to run back and forth with a mug. Plus, it’s prettier than my utilitarian metal bottle.

Great choice of GLASS-it’s great to get the message out!! You’re doing good for YOU and the ENVIRONMENT! I’ve done a bunch of research on water bottles and here are some highlights:

My friend and I also have a small business in which we sell glass water bottles, among other fun and inspirational eco-friendly treasures. We have a few varieties of glass water bottles–and I think you might like our Retro bottle… thick glass and great 32oz capacity.

Here’s something I’ve done: make the glass bottle (I just use an old kombucha bottle from the store) a crash net. Just some cotton and about 20 minutes of crochet. Let me know if you don’t crochet or knit and you want one, I have plenty of extras :)

also, sparkling italian lemonade bottles work well too! the added bonus is the delicious sparkling italian lemonade that you get to drink before filling up the bottle with your own water.

Wow, I admittedly thought this might be kind of a lame post (haha), maybe because my friends think my water bottle is lame, but you guys have made me so happy! hahaha.

@mandie: I’d heard of that, but I have two feelings about it: a) that article doesn’t point to anything that’s been substantiated (there’s a lot of the word “maybe”), and it seems like a lot to boycott a company that’s pretty eco-friendly and kid-friendly over a maybe…especially when the only person that’s really talking about it is an ex-employee, and b) you have to pick your battles, and I don’t think this is one of them for me. If he were doing something now to try and kill off our people? Sure. But with what’s being said now, I don’t think it’s really my battle.

@twochicksnest: I had a really funny visual image of your cat and totally laughed out loud!

    @Heather: thanks for the feedback!

@Darcy: LMAO! You rock. That’s a great idea!

@andrew: YES! Those are SO pretty. And what’s inside originally tastes really good, too!!

Wow, this is sort of genius!  Nice!!

Is the glass bottle convenient to throw in your bag and carry around like a Nalgene, or is it just something to drink from at home (in which case, I use a glass)? I still use a Nalgene (with the chemicals I work with on a daily basis, I don’t think my water bottle is going to be what kills me)… but I carry it back and fort with me every day with a mile walk each way to the lab. Is a glass bottle too heavy for this? Also, does it seal tightly enough to toss in with my laptop?

@Julie: It’s pretty heavy, I have to admit, especially if you’re carrying a laptop, too! I think the seal is pretty good, but I would be worried it would get dislodged if it banged up against something in the wrong way. I think it’s mostly good for desk use.

OMG! I fell in love with glass bottles when we went to New Zealand last year. All the restaurants there put filled ones on each table for you to serve yourself water. Brilliant! I especially love the deep blue colored glass ones. And I especially love you for thinking of using these at home.

i used nalgene and moved on to kleankanteen, which i use daily. and i totally get what you mean about how long the cap takes to screw on! but i do like that it can get tossed around and be ok. i’m going to have to check out glass bottles since they’re cuter :)

I am SO excited!! I have been getting tons of tips for non plastic water bottles to get. I have only known one dad who used glass bottles BUT he used the gintic gallon sized kind, which broke in front of the swimming pool when all the children were going to lessons. The Ikea one looks PERFECT!!!!! Thank you. Also love your blog about the chicken coops. Reminds me when we had chickens as a girl. I’d love to be able to do that again.

Now I would’ ve used ChickHen to flash custom firmware to his psp but he updated to 5.55. So I was wondering if the Half Byte Loader program would be able to run the 5.50 D3 installer at all, since I noticed the program is beta and apparently as many problems left, long enough to flash firmware without bricking his psp.
